Wild Flowers

While picking flowers for the week, I went with tulips for the first time – and now I have no idea why I never got them before! They’re such a beautiful purple color and so quintessentially spring. Plus they’ve entertained me by being completely strange. Here’s how they started off, all proper and upright (bad cell phone pic, sorry):

Here they are the next morning:

Aaaaand here they are now, running wild:

It’s like a tulip UFO!

I thought maybe they were stretching out in search of sunlight (as plants are wont to do), and I felt a little bad so I tried putting them in front of my window. They didn’t seem to stretch uniformly towards the light though, so not sure what this craziness is all about. It certainly adds a new dimension to your typical vase of flowers!

Tulips are my favorite flower, and this always happens to them! I thought it was because of the light thing, too!

Hi! I've heard you're supposed to put just a teeny tiny amount of water for tulips. If you put a lot of water in the vase, they grow and do that crazy thing. So, in case you want to keep them "civilized", you can try tiny amount of water – and apparently even some ice cubes with the drop of water in the bottom of the vase. – Heidi

    • I agree Bernice! I like them straight but I don't mind them bent. Elegant is a good word for them!

Tulips grow once in water, no matter how much you give them. Here in Holland we put maybe 5 inches or so in (always cold) and then add as necessary. They start out straight and then relax as the days go by….they look much nicer "au natural" like yours have become than straight and tall. Lovely color…and I bet they started from here!
