Book to Big Screen: Before I Go To Sleep

It always captures my attention when I see that a book I’ve read is going to come to life on the big screen, so I was intrigued to discover that S. J. Watson’s Before I Go To Sleep will be hitting theaters in September. I read the book a while ago and though I remember having some issues with it, I’m still interested in seeing how they adapt it. The novel’s narrator is a woman who has a form of amnesia – every day she wakes up with no memory of who or where she is, or most anything about her life (kinda like Drew Barrymore in 50 First Dates). Every day she wakes up beside a stranger, who has to explain to her that he is in fact, her husband, and she has had amnesia since she suffered an accident years back. Each day she then pieces together the bits of her life through reading the journal that she keeps to remind herself of who she is. One day she opens her journal and discovers a startling message from herself, which sets into motion a chain of events that prompts her to begin to investigate what happened to her, and to question if she can trust anyone in her life at all.

The one thing I didn’t love about the novel (which, given the plot, seems kind of unavoidable for the author) was the way it kept jumping back on itself. Since the narrator is an amnesiac who forgets everything when she goes to sleep at night, the novel kept jumping back to Point A, where she wakes up and has to re-learn everything she discovered the day before (by reading her notes to herself), and so it felt repetitive. However, I really like the concept of it (just wasn’t in love with the execution) and so I’m excited to see how they pull it off in movie form. I’m also pretty psyched because it’s starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman – a great cast is always a great starting point. Check out the trailer and let me know what you think! If you’ve read the book I’d love to hear your thoughts as well.
